Fire-damaged structures present dangers.
If you experience a fire loss in your home or business you must take the following safety requirements:
- Call 911
- Quickly Get Everyone Out (including pets)
- Follow the instructions of Fire Fighters
After the fire, do not enter the property until you do so with a trained professional, usually a firefighter. Wait until they have secured the scene. If they tell you to stay out, stay out!
Many times after a significant fire loss, the structure can be unstable and could cause significant injuries. Floors can give way. Items from above may fall. Broken glass can cause injuries. Wet floors are a slip hazard. The electricity will be turned off and even in the daytime, your visibility will be impaired.
It is best to get your insurance company involved right away and have a restoration company like SERVPRO of El Centro/ Salton City help you with the property damage recovery process.
Once the authorities have "cleared the property for your entry" make sure you wear gloves and protective respiratory equipment. It is not safe to breathe in the harmful odors (gases) that are left after the fire. Be careful touching items for it will smear soot and make certain items more difficult to clean.
